Having trouble?
Here are some frequently asked questions, and the answers to go with them!

Error 1 - while recording

If you see a dialog saying "Error 1" when you begin recording it may be that you've upgraded your user account account (changed it's name, for example) or otherwise moved the temporary folders that iShowU used to use.

Please go into Preferences (for iShowU) and check the folder locations for the temporary storage and movie storage. These need to exist. Later versions of iShowU do check them before attempting to use them, but some older builds do not.

I can't reset my account password!

There may be an email issue. What should happen is this:

1) You click to reset the password.
2) The system sends you an email, to confirm that you want to do this. It's doing this to check that you have access to the email address that you're trying to reset (to prevent fraud).
3) You then click the link that it's sent you - and the password is immediately reset.
4) The system sends you a confirmation email, with the new password detail.

Check that you've received the last email - the one with the confirmation in it. If you've not, wait a little bit (maximum 20m) - as sometimes the emails can take a while to arrive. Also - check your spam and/or junk email folders as it might have been incorrectly marked as such.

If all else fails please do get in touch with us. We want to make it work for you!

My machine crashed - how do I reregister?

Simply go to the website and login using your email address that you used when purchasing from us. Once there you can see all of your previous purchases, along with the registration codes for them.

Poor frame rates in video playback

Getting video "just right" can sometimes be tricky - it can depend on a number of things, including:

  • What kind of graphics card do you have? Some graphics cards are simply faster than others. It may well help to capture video resolutions that have a size being a multiple of 32 (you can turn this option on in Preferences).

  • What compression method are you using? A good compression method (for example, H264) uses considerably more CPU than a light one. Trying using Apple Intermediate instead, to see if this helps. Support staff at SWB have found Apple Intermediate to yield capture rates up to 30fps

  • Is your disk close to full? Video capture takes up lots of disk space, and iShowU writes the frames out to disk as it's capturing. If you are low on space, it is possible that the disk is also quite fragmented, and the operating system has to write the movie in non-contiguous chunks to the hard disk.

  • Do you have access to a second hard disk? If so, it may help to create a folder on the disk for iShowU's temporary files - then go into Preferences and set the temporary storage location to that folder.

I cannot install Soundflower

Please enable logging, try again (so that the failure is logger) and then post the results onto the forum for someone in the support team to take a look at.

An alternative, is to install Soundflower manually. This can be done as follows:
  1. Get the latest Soundflower from http://cycling74.com
  2. Install the drivers (there is a package included in the download to do this)
  3. Reboot

After you have completed this process, when you click on record system audio iShowU should no longer prompt you to install the Soundflower drivers.

I'm using VLC, but iShowU doesn't record sound, what gives?

It appears that VLC works out what the current system output device is when it starts and remembers it. It then plays to that device. iShowU uses Soundflower (http://cycling74.com) to capture all audio and when you enable the record system audio option it switches the current system output to the Soundflower (2ch) device and plays the result of that back to the previous output device you had selected, so that you can hear what's going on.

VLC doesn't appear to see this 'switch' and blindly continues to output it's audio to whatever device was selected before iShowU started.

The workaround is to start iShowU first - with it's record system audio option enabled. VLC will then output it's audio to the Soundflower (2ch) device, and all will be fine.

Note - the sideeffect of this workaround is that if you disable the record system audio option (or quit iShowU), you won't hear the audio from VLC. This is because VLC is still playing back to the Soundflower (2ch) device, yet iShowU has kindly reselected whatever default audio output device you had set.

Registration Kagi key doesn't work - help!

Please check that you have entered your name, email address and the registration code without leading or trailing spaces (although you might not believe it, this is the cause of 99% of registration problems).

It's possible that if your name contains non ASCII characters (Japanese, some European languages, etc) then the registration code won't work. In this case, please get in touch with support@shinywhitebox.com in order to get a replacement registration key.

iShowU is crashing when I hit record

We've had a number of reports of this, and every time it has been an older version of QuickTime causing the issue. Make sure that you're version of QuickTime is up to date with the latest release from Apple.

iShowU crashes on startup / just bought or upgraded, and can't start it

This can sometimes be caused by corrupted preferences/preset files. Try deleting the following:
  1. ~/Library/Application Support/iShowU/iShowU-Presets.xml
  2. ~/Library/Preferences/com.tcdc.Digitizer.plist

If the problem persists, it could be caused by a number of things. To be certain it is necessary to get some further information from you. If you have not done so already, please enable logging, and then post the results onto the forum for someone in support to look at.
